Avoiding Internet Traps
Nowadays, Internet scams, online identity theft, and phishing websites are soaring into hundreds of thousands. To avoid being trapped by one of them, follow the steps below:
- Always pay close attention to the URL in the URL bar of your browser. Some dubious domain endings such as .cx, .info, .to are more likely to contain malicious stuff than well-recognized .tld domains such as .com, .net, .org or .co.uk
- Familiarize yourself with scam techniques used on the Internet. You may also want to read our extensive guide on how to avoid virus infection.
- Before sending any personal information via online form, make sure the site you are dealnig with is legitimate and there's no scam involved.
- When contacting secure SSL websites, always make sure there's https:// in the URL bar, and that the SSL certificate of the website is valid and current. You can do so by clicking the tiny padlock in the bottom-right status bar of your Web browser.
- Avoid online purchases , unless it is with a recognised organisation or online retailer.
