How to check for a new version and upgrade Norton

You can check for a new Norton version at any time, and upgrade it when there's an upgrade available for your product. In this tutorial we're explaining how to upgrade and what's the difference between an upgrade and an update.

Checking for Norton upgrade

In order to check if there's a newer Norton version available, you need to complete these steps:

  1. Open Norton Main Window. You can do this by clicking the tray icon or the desktop shortcut icon.
  2. Click Help & Support in the upper right corner.
  3. Select the Check for New Version option.

You'll be redirected to the Update Center page at norton.com, which will tell you about any new versions available for you.

If your version is current the following information is displayed:

Your Norton product version is up-to-date. You already have the latest version of your Norton product installed on your computer.

Please note that you must have a valid and current subscription to do this. Also, your Norton installation needs to have been already activated.

If there's a newer version available for you, a download link will be displayed. Newer versions usually include security updates, and feature enhancements. To download your upgrade follow the on-screen instructions. Again, only registered customers with a valid subscription are eligible for the free Norton upgrade download.

Please note that some information about your product are sent to Symantec Update Center while checking for a new version.

During the upgrade installation your previous version will be irrecoverably uninstalled, but Norton will attempt to preserve all your configuration settings. To make sure no data is lost, just save all your configuration information before proceeding with the upgrade.

Norton upgrades vs. updates

Many users are confused about what's the difference between an upgrade and an update for their Norton software. Simply put, an upgrade is when you download and install a completely new version of Norton on your computer like in the case we described above. For example, if you have Norton 360 Version 3.0 and you are installing Version 4.0, then it is an upgrade.

An update, however, is a small download performed by the LiveUpdate tool included in every Norton software. Updates are usually downloaded every couple of minutes and installed without you being informed about the process while you work. Norton updates include new virus definitions and minor program enhancements.
